Research abstract

This project aims to develop a compact, high-resolution multispectral emitter array using quantum dot (QD) downconversion layers excited by ultraviolet (UVA) microLEDs (µLEDs). Each pixel will feature five addressable subpixels emitting in UVA, visible, short-wave infrared (SWIR ~2?µm), and mid-wave infrared (MWIR) Bands 4A (3.5ñ4.2?µm) and 4B (4.5ñ4.8?µm). The key innovation lies in a cascade excitation architecture, where QD stacks are ordered by bandgap to enable efficient stepwise photon downconversion from a single UVA excitation source (~365?nm), overcoming the poor UV absorption of SWIR and MWIR QDs.ÝTo support this architecture, QLEDCures will integrate its deep QD device expertise with the University of Central Floridaís (UCF) capabilities in QD synthesis and optical modeling, and leverage a strategic partnership with Chip Design Systems (CDS) for high-resolution RIIC (Read-In Integrated Circuit) support. Phase I will validate the cascade concept, assess QD material sets for each band, design the pixel architecture using a pentile-style layout to suppress thermal and spectral crosstalk, and model optical/thermal performance.ÝEach QD sub-stack will be printed using inkjet jet deposition, with intermediate encapsulation layers ensuring vertical stack formation and spectral isolation. The RIIC will enable 5◊16-bit modulation per pixel and >1?kHz frame rate. Phase I Option will define printing protocols, finalize a Phase II prototype plan, and de-risk integration. The resulting multispectral QD emitter platform will support Navy test and evaluation needs for hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) simulation and dual-band seeker testing with unprecedented pixel-level spectral control.
