Research abstract

Critical DoD weapons systems require continuous maintenance; many of the replacement components are available from single or limited sources resulting in lengthy and expensive procurements. Although the government typically paid for the research and development of the specialized equipment often the government does not own data rights and cannot easily solicit proposals from alternate sources. Creation of Technical Data Packages (TDP) through Reverse Engineering of components with limited government data provides an avenue to obtain multiple sources and to obtain the accompanying reduction in procurement time and cost. The target of this effort is a component from the ICBM Weapon System that is procured through the DLA Nuclear Enterprise Support Office (NESO). The effort requires rigorous research to fully understand the original intent of this weapon system component and to identify all key physical and performance requirements. Further research must be performed to identify product enhancements that will provided extended life cycle. Manufacturing methods will be researched to reduce cost and to reduce procurement lead times.A TDP will be created, with full government data rights, that will enable DLA competitive procurement of this limited source component.A Source Approval Request (SAR) will be submitted for manufacturing approval.
