Research abstract

All solid-state batteries can offer increased energy and improved safety for naval aircraft applications. Recently, the ionic conductivity of solid electrolytes has improved significantly. Current solid-state batteries however, still suffer from low power and short cycle life, especially at low temperatures, due to poor interfacial conductivity and stability between solid electrolytes and electrode materials. Lynntech proposes to develop a practical all solid-state (PASS) lithium-ion battery (LIB) based on the combination of core-shell electrode materials and high conductivity solid electrolytes to provide high energy and power, long cycle life, as well as functionality over a wide operating temperature range. During Phase I, Lynntech have successfully developed advanced core-shell electrodes and high conductivity solid electrolytes. We have demonstrated the feasibility of core-shell electrode concept. Initial safety/abuse testing showed that Lynntech’s all solid-state Li-ion full cells are stable and safe under short circuit and overcharge conditions and flammability testing of electrolytes. During Phase II, Lynntech will develop a prototype 28 V PASS LIB system to meet the Navy’s performance requirements. Lynntech will also perform a preliminary cost estimate for battery manufacturing and demonstrate the manufacturing feasibility.
