Research abstract

Energy storage systems comprised of high density batteries provide numerous benefits for USMC hybrid power systems. However high density energy storage systems, which must be installed in locations populated by personnel and sensitive equipment, can fail catastrophically. A modular battery design is required that is adaptable to different battery types and which meets all USMC requirements including safety, operation, storage and transportation. During this Phase II project a cost effective, lightweight, corrosion and fire resistant, robust Composite Universal USMC Battery (CUUB) module will be developed that will contain all electrical and chemical hazards of a battery storage system while meeting all structural and environmental exposure design requirements for use aboard USMC vehicles. The use of fire resistant composite materials in the CUUB modular enclosure design will provide for a cost effective, lightweight, durable, high strength enclosure structure that will have a long corrosion free service life. The CUUB module will be a functional standalone energy storage module and will operate as part of USMC expeditionary stationary and mobile hybrid power systems. The CUUB module will be versatile to allow operation with batteries of different chemistries and size/shape while maintaining containment of an unexpected energy release from inside the module.
