Research abstract

Paragon proposed development of the Coacting High Integrity Material Energetic Release Attenuation (CHIMERA) system to contain energy release, exhaust products, and heat from failures of lithium ion batteries. CHIMERA uses a building block approach whereby layers of materials are tailored to provide thermal and over-pressurization protection for battery storage applications. Once qualified, these different layers can be scaled in size and assembled in different combinations to create a new storage solution for new applications with minimized non-recurring engineering expenses. The CHIMERA battery storage concept consists of individual battery storage bags, an outer enclosure, and a deluge system. Batteries are placed in bags to provide thermal isolation between batteries. The outer enclosure will contain and vent exhaust products from a failing battery. The deluge system distributes water throughout the CHIMERA enclosure to quench battery thermal runaway casualties. CHIMERA will also provide alarm functionality with visual and audible crew notification that a battery failure event is occurring. CHIMERA will be sized (volume and mass) to permit easy transport to, translation trough, and installation on a ship, reducing installation burdens for crews.
