Research abstract

This proposal addresses the Air Force SBIR program objective to develop a rapidly converging SAASM-compliant military GPS receiver for use at GEO to address the limitations of current SAASM receivers that do not allow for side-lobe tracking and do not meet the size, weight and power (SWaP) constraints of the intended target space platforms, such as Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS) satellites in geosynchronous orbit (GEO) and other military and commercial space missions. The Phase I study results have demonstrated the feasibility of SRG GEO side-lobe tracking using a high gain directional antenna and identified GPS receiver signal sensitivity enhancements required to support SRG receiver side-lobe tracking for GEO operation and to meet the stringent SRG program navigation accuracy, convergence time, and SWaP requirements. The proposed SRG Phase II program will further refine the Phase I architecture design, perform a trade-off study between SAASM receiver and MGUE receiver, develop a preliminary design of a space qualifiable SAASM/MGUE receiver, and implement the detailed design in an engineering model (EM). A brassboard receiver performance demonstration for the selected space application will be performed in the Phase II program.
