Research abstract

ABSTRACT: Ionterra Sciences proposes to develop a multiplexed fatigue status detection system utilizing sweat as the diagnostic fluid the based on ion detection through anchored biomolecular complexes. A compact, fatigue monitoring device with the 1) sensitivity to identify low concentrations of biomarkers; 2) simplicity of a fitness monitor, 3) robustness of microarray diagnostics 4) use of non-invasive sweat based biomarkers would fulfill the needs of field fatigue identification system and provide numerous logistical benefits to armed forces, and the civilian sector where life-critical decisions are made.A multiplexed device with the simplicity of a fitness monitor that is capable of detecting fatigue early and transmitting the data will provide a solution that mitigates increased risk factors faced by fatigued Warfighters.; BENEFIT: A wide range of stressors puts pilots and Warfighters at risk for psychological trauma and medical difficulties ranging from problems of memory and cognition, substance abuse, and decreased task performance, and fatigue.Unfortunately, mental performance directly translates to mission accomplishment and safety. As people become fatigued there is a substantial increase in the frequency with which longer than usual reaction times occur. Consequently, in military operations greater than 70% of all catastrophic mishaps are caused by human error. Since the research literature and common experience tells us that fatigue and stressors can affect decision-making and performance on the training and battle field, it is imperative that command is capable of detecting fatigue and modifying plans based on Warfighter conditions.Using this information intelligently can result in fewer lives lost and equipment damage.
