Research abstract

Our goal through Phase II is to leverage our team’s expertise in AI research—with experience from Stanford, MIT, Cornell, Microsoft Research—and education research science, to develop a fully personalized AI learning system that accelerates adult English Language Learners (ELL) in Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs, by effectively integrating language acquisition into workplace training. As an early Phase IB awardee, our product prior to Phase I consisted of a functional but minimal prototype of a Q&A support tool that helped students with language-related questions. The prototype had no AI personalization engine, and only served about 300 paying students across a few pilot schools. Through our Phase I, we developed two new AI components that gear us up for at-scale commercialization and learner impact at the end of Phase II. First, we developed a context-aware AI Tutor, providing level appropriate explanations with multilingual support in 100+ languages. Second, we built an AI Personalized Learning Engine (PLE) that personalizes language practice for different student levels and weaknesses, translating into real-world language gains. Through new R&D in Phase II, we’ll expand the knowledge of our AI Tutor to IET healthcare, and deepen our AI PLE through personalized practice for on-the-job training.
