Research abstract

The proposed project, Tyto Online: Statistics & Probability, offers an immersive learning experience designed to teach middle school students statistics and probability through real-world, applied problem solving. This project will build off the award-winning existing science game-based learning platform, Tyto Online, but will bring its approach to a critical subject area in math. Statistics and probability performance for U.S. students is at historical lows, and is the lowest among all math domains. Students will engage with interactive, story-driven quests set in a 3D game environment, tackling authentic challenges like helping a business owner analyze customer data to grow their café. These quests integrate data collection, visualization, and interpretation, immersing students in real-world contexts to deepen their understanding of statistics and data science. Aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, the project includes scaffolded game mechanics for data visualization that progress across grades 6-8. Supplemental materials, such as teacher guides and AI-powered student support and formative assessment tools, will provide actionable insights and support rich classroom discourse. By combining authentic problem-solving with engaging gameplay, Tyto Online: Statistics & Probability aims to foster critical statistical literacy, preparing students for data-driven futures.
