Research abstract

The goal of this project is to empower educators to design place-based learning experiences that integrate STEM education with students' local environments. By anchoring the curriculum in the community, this approach enhances student engagement and fosters a stronger sense of connection. The project focuses on developing innovative, educator-centric tools to enhance system functionality and address common challenges educators face in planning and implementing experiential learning. These tools will simplify the processes of planning, executing, and analyzing STEM field experiences by mitigating logistical and cost-related barriers. Educators will gain the ability to create highly customized experiences, ranging from on-site field trips and station-based classroom activities to fully virtual events. AI-driven features will further enhance this capability by providing data-informed site recommendations, assisting with lesson planning, delivering real-time updates, and enriching the overall educational experience—all while reducing educators' workload. The GaiaXus Environmental Learning System transforms STEM education by integrating affordable, accurate environmental sensors with an innovative mobile app, specifically designed to serve low-resource communities and schools. The existing product allows educators to build their own lab experiences including GaiaXus sensors. Enabling students’ hands on experience measuring water quality parameters. The platform empowers students to collect and analyze real-world environmental data within the context of educator-developed lesson plans delivered during field exercises. The GaiaXus mobile app provides instrument control, offline functionality, and NGSS-aligned lesson plans, fostering hands-on, inquiry-based learning in both classroom and field settings. A built-in collaboration engine stores environmental data and facilitates partnerships with researchers and community organizations, amplifying the impact of student contributions. By building on the GaiaXus platform, this project offers scalable, interdisciplinary resources that promote STEM knowledge, social-emotional learning, and environmental stewardship, ensuring equitable, high-impact education for all students, particularly in underserved communities.
