Research abstract

To address the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) training challenge of teaching Navy sonar operators advanced concepts and tactical-system operation in complex environments given constraints on training and compressed training cycles, Applied Research in Acoustics LLC (ARiA) has developed and evaluated the feasibility of E-SAIL, the Environment for Surface ASW Interactive Learning. E-SAIL is a unique learning tool and advanced visual-reconstruction capability for simulation-based ASW training and interactive replay and control of data from reconstructed tape exercises, that supports schoolhouse and onboard training and after-action reviews (AARs) while increasing ST proficiency, reducing training time, and increasing retention. E-SAIL provides an interactive visual-reconstruction capability for ASW training comprising a 3D visualization environment and direct-manipulation graphical user interface (GUI) that deploys on tactical hardware through a platform-agnostic build environment and interfaces with the current Common Active Display, Sonar Performance Prediction Functional Segment (SPPFS), Recorder Functional Segment (RecFS), and the Surface ASW Synthetic Trainer (SAST) functional segment of the AN/SQQ89A(V)15 surface-ship tactical system. Based on the positive results achieved in Phase I, ARiA proposes a Phase II effort to further develop and evaluate E-SAIL and perform development and integration efforts that will enable transition of E-SAIL to the AN/SQQ89A(V)15 surface-ship tactical system.
