Research abstract

The goal of this project is to address the Navy need for tactical-oceanography training by (1) using the ESAIL capability created by ARiA as a platform to develop interactive sandbox tools tailored around specific learning objectives and (2) deploying these tools to the Moodle learning-management system (LMS) component of the AN/BQQ-10 (ARCI) and AN/SQQ-89 programs of record (PoRs). ESAIL is a browser-based tool for interactive 2D and 3D visualization of the ocean environment and sensor performance in that ocean environment. It provides a stand-alone capability for simulation of sensor performance using Oceanographic and Atmospheric Master Library (OAML) databases and models but, unlike tactical decision aids (TDAs) such as the Submarine Tactical Decision Aid (STDA), ESAIL provides a high-fidelity sandboxing environment that enables manipulation of the environment and visualization of the resulting deltas. ESAIL supports integration with the Moodle learning-management system (LMS) as well as the ability to be launched from within Moodle LMS and used in any web browser. In this Phase II effort ARiA will further develop, demonstrate, and deliver a tactical-oceanography training capability for the Moodle LMS based on the ESAIL platform. The statement of work and milestones for the proposed Phase II development effort are aligned with the AxB spiral-development cycle and target delivery of the production-ready software build to AxB27.
