Research abstract
In the proposed Phase I program, Sentek Instrument LLC (Sentek) will collaborate with the Engines and Combustion Laboratory (ECL) at the University of Alabama (UA) to develop and demonstrate the performance of minimally invasive sensors capable of collecting time-resolved channel pressure and instantaneous temperature/wall heat flux measurements in the Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) environment, as illustrated in Figure 1. The harsh environment operation of the unique fiber optic sensing system relies on the high frequency (update rate greater than 400 kHz) interrogation of a monolithic single crystal sapphire optical sensing element with a small form factor (~5 mm) that is capable of simultaneous total and dynamic pressure (in excess of 1,000 psi), temperature (in excess of 1000°C) and heat flux measurements that can be readily multiplexed for installation at selected locations in the RDE. By taking advantage of the proprietary suite of technologies that provides the foundation for the NovaPT™-E/D sensors, Sentek is well-positioned to develop sensors capable of unprecedented performance (measurement accuracies of ~1 psi and ~1?C). The inherent small form factor will allow for the sensor to be seamlessly integrated into an operating RDE to provide operators and researchers with a diagnostic tool that currently does not exist on the market. Sentek is well positioned to take advantage of the expertise and capabilities at ECL at UA to provide the Air Force with a cost-effective sensing system (single sensor cost < $5K and interrogator <$20K) to monitor the impact of detonative flow and validate computational models. The relative maturity of the core technology (commercially available for over 5 years) and strong patent portfolio will accelerate efforts towards commercialization and market acceptance.
