Research abstract

Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) are a promising technology offering higher thermodynamic performance in a more compact form than traditional propulsion systems, potentially enhancing range, speed, and affordability compared to rockets, ramjets, and gas turbines. Understanding of RDEs is limited due to the challenge of getting high quality data in extreme environments.  There is a need for the development of high-sampling-rate, extreme-temperature operable  pressure sensors capable of operating and collecting useful time-resolved pressure information directly in-situ within the RDE. Measuring accurate, time-resolved pressures in the RDE annulus presents challenges, including the requirement for extreme temperature tolerance, very high measurement rates, and compact packaging. Sporian Microsystems has a strong track record of successful research and development of high-temperature sensors, including intelligent pressure sensors for aerospace applications. The long-term goal of this proposed effort is to build upon previous technology developments to create ultrafast, high-frequency pressure sensors that can operate reliably in the high-temperature environments encountered in RDE systems. The Phase I effort will focus on working with stakeholders to define system requirements, evaluating revised hardware/electronics architectures and designs, and proof of principle testing and demonstration using benchtop-scale prototype hardware. If successful, Sporian will be well-positioned for the Phase II efforts focused on full system prototyping and relevant environment testing/demonstration.
