Research abstract

The U.S. Air Force faces persistent shortages of flight-worthy aircraft, driven in part by limited repair capabilities for advanced materials and geometries, compounded by labor shortages and extensive backlogs in canopy refurbishment. Canopies are vital to an aircraft’s operational effectiveness, so any delay in their production or restoration directly diminishes readiness and lethality. Currently, canopy sanding is performed by highly skilled artisans using painstaking, manual methods prone to human error and potential long-term ergonomic hazards. The intricacy of modern canopy geometries has historically made automation elusive, as fixed automotive-style robotic systems cannot adapt to high-mix aerospace surfaces. GrayMatter Robotics addresses this gap by deploying AI?powered robotic solutions capable of dynamically sensing and sanding contoured surfaces. Building on proven high?mix automation technology, the Phase I effort examined a mobile, flexible robotic sanding system specialized for warfighter canopy refurbishment, demonstrating the feasibility of rapid, adaptive finishing that reduces labor dependency, rework rates, and production bottlenecks.
