Research abstract

GrayMatter Robotics proposes to develop an advanced robotic system capable of detecting and correcting optical distortions in highly contoured canopy transparencies to provide pilots with clear visibility. This system will address key challenges in the production and maintenance of Air Force fighter canopies, where distortions from the manufacturing process require costly, labor-intensive, and artisanal rework cycles to remove. The solution will be designed to remove distortions and defects in acrylic and polycarbonate surfaces, ensuring compliance with Air Force quality standards, while significantly reducing reliance on manual processes. Leveraging GrayMatter Robotics’ patented, commercially-proven, robotic sanding technology currently in use for high-mix manufacturing applications across the US, this proposed system will incorporate advanced sensor arrays to capture real-time distortion data and AI-driven algorithms to execute precise robotic sanding and polishing actions. The system will be adaptable to various canopy geometries and will be designed to meet the high-precision needs of complex, deep-draw Air Force transparencies. Beyond the DoD, the proposed system has significant commercial potential for applications that demand stringent optical or surface smoothness standards across various industries. The expertise of GrayMatter Robotics lies in the development of turn-key systems using off-the-shelf hardware, which will ensure a scalable and adaptable solution. Our strong marketing, sales, deployment, and customer support teams will drive the successful transition of this system from development to operational deployment, delivering tangible results for the Air Force and industries across the US.
