Research abstract

This proposal focuses on the integration of a smart robotic surface finishing system in aircraft maintenance and repair operations, specifically highlighting the design of a robotic belt grinding system for weld and surface grinding. Smart robotic cells are needed in high-mix manufacturing environments where diverse parts and materials must be processed efficiently. Manual surface finishing in aircraft maintenance poses several challenges, primarily due to ergonomics, labor shortages, and rework costs. Ergonomically, the manual process can be physically demanding, leading to operator fatigue and increased risk of injury. Labor shortages exacerbate the issue, as finding skilled technicians who can perform manual surface finishing efficiently is increasingly difficult. This shortage can result in longer turnaround times and increased costs. Additionally, manual processes often require significant rework due to errors and inconsistent results, which further drives up costs and impacts the overall efficiency of maintenance and repair operations. GrayMatter Robotics is a provider of turnkey robotic automation solutions for manufacturing applications by using the right combination of humans, robots, and AI. We provide manufacturers with rapidly deployable, easy-to-use, and highly dependable smart robotic cells, utilizing state-of-the-art technologies, with no upfront capital costs. We are pioneering physics-informed AI / embodied AI to endow robots with superhuman abilities to autonomously perform tasks at unprecedented speed and quality. Our solutions enable our customers to improve performance in terms of cost, productivity, quality, safety, and sustainability. We propose to extend our commercially available, autonomous robotic disc sanding and grinding systems to be used for belt grinding and sanding. This system will be designed to allow for the use of our current disc sanding and grinding solutions as well.  Therefore our customers will have the option of performing disc sanding, rotary grinding, belt grinding, and belt sanding in the same cell. Our patented and proprietary AI-powered robotic cells have been successfully used in a wide variety of surface finishing applications to reduce cost, increase human productivity, reduce ergonomically challenging work, compress cycle times, and expand capacity.
