Research abstract

The Department of the Air Force faces a growing challenge: extracting actionable insights from massive volumes of unstructured technical data. Maintainers, operators, and instructors spend hours searching through legacy documents, technical orders, field manuals, SOPs, and training guides, slowing decision-making, increasing cognitive burden, and reducing combat readiness. Agolo’s proposed solution transforms this bottleneck into a capability.Agolo AI is a dual-use, no-code virtual expert platform that converts fragmented data into trusted, explainable answers tailored for mission-critical needs. Originally built for commercial product support, the system combines machine-generated knowledge graphs with Graph RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) to deliver high-accuracy responses grounded in verified sources. This approach overcomes key shortcomings of standard generative AI, hallucination, inaccuracy, and poor context retention—making it suitable for defense environments.Through this Direct-to-Phase II SBIR, Agolo will adapt and deploy its platform for F-16 and MQ-9 use cases. The effort includes building virtual expert prototypes to support both training and operational scenarios across Air Education and Training Command and maintenance units. Each prototype will ingest thousands of pages of technical content and convert it into machine-readable knowledge, enabling real-time, traceable answers for fault resolution, mission rehearsal, and technical instruction.Agolo’s technology has been validated through feasibility testing with AFRL and NASIC, demonstrating improved relevance and precision over baseline LLM and standard RAG systems. Maintainers using Agolo’s assistant can resolve tasks faster and express higher confidence due to traceable, domain-specific responses. The 49th Maintenance Group and 49th Wing at Holloman AFB serve as committed end-users, providing feedback, test environments, and operational insight to guide the platform’s development and deployment. This solution aligns with DAF operational imperatives, including Readiness to Deploy and Fight, Operationally Focused ABMS, and Tactical Air Dominance. It supports DoD critical technology areas such as Trusted AI, Advanced Computing, and Human-Machine Interfaces. By enabling secure, modular deployment, even at the tactical edge, Agolo equips warfighters with faster answers, reduced downtime, and greater decision confidence. The system is built to scale across platforms and to transition quickly into operational use.
