Research abstract

Towed acoustic arrays are used by the US Navy to detect submarines. Knowing the shape of the array is critical for achieving optimal system performance. There is a need for Array Shape Estimators (AES) with greater accuracy, ease of use, and reduced cost. The research proposed here is targeted toward fulfilling these needs. We plan to work toward a fiber optic sensor that will measure the shape of a towed array with minimal input from telemetry sensors. During this phase I effort, we anticipate demonstrating proof of concept for some key issues including: -Demonstrating the possibility of shape sensing through 1km of fiber -Estimating the achievable system performance -Measuring the affect that power loss at optical connectors has on system performance
