Research abstract
Knowledge Based Systems, Inc. proposes to design, develop, and demonstrate a methodology, metadata model and suite of tools to unify the storage, transfer, and retrieval of T&E metadata across multiple systems, ranges, test articles and test missions. At the heart of the T&E metadata support for both legacy and future test missions lies the development of the T&E Metadata Reference Model (T&E Ref Mod). Accompanying the T&E Ref Mod is the Test & Evaluation Metadata PLaza (TEMPL) portal that supports the extraction, representation, transfer, translation, verification, validation, completeness checking, retrieval and visualization of structured and unstructured T&E data via its relationship to metadata. During the Phase I effort, the initial T&E Ref Mod and the proof-of-concept TEMPL portal were demonstrated to show the effectiveness of TEMPL methodology and the benefits of collating legacy data and metadata, and of performing verification, validation, and completeness (VV&C) checks on metadata. The Phase II effort will significantly extend the Phase I results by developing a robust T&E Ref Mod and TEMPL methodology that is valid throughout DoD ranges, and supporting its standardization. Additionally, the Phase I proof-of-concept TEMPL portal and VV&C capability will be extended in order to demonstrate the importance of metadata management. BENEFIT: Our solution will drastically mitigate the difficulties associated with achieving better understanding of T&E for both systems and system-of-systems. The comprehensive T&E Ref Mod and the related validation, metadata abstraction, and visualization generation tools will result in significant reductions in time and effort needed to comprehensively define T&E metadata as well as order of magnitude efficiency and information quality gains. Finally, the reference mod and proposed web-based visualization portal will enable net-centricity for both legacy and future T&E data.
