Research abstract

Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) radar provides an all-weather day-night capability to detect moving targets and provide robust persistent day-night surveillance of regions of interest. While these radar systems are designed to detect moving vehicles and human beings, they typically also produce a large number of false alarms due to clutter and wildlife. These false alarms can be expensive in terms of time and resources required to prosecute the false tracks, resulting in an ineffective system. In addition to the cost of investigating false alarms, an additional consequence is that if too many false alarms are reported, the operators will begin to ignore the target reports resulting in an ineffective system. The specific focus of the proposed effort is the automatic extraction of intelligence about enemy movement patterns or lines of communication from GMTI detection data. This is particularly challenging when the sensor output data contains a large number of false alarms. Under the proposed effort ISL will provide the Army with a capability to automatically extract information about enemy lines of communication from GMIT sensor data.
