Research abstract

Luna Innovations Incorporated proposes to develop a of stand-off covert method of detecting and identifying biological and chemical warfare agents using functionalized nanoparticles.  Alterations of the near infrared spectra from nanoparticle-based probe surfaces under invisible laser illumination will be detected through a high-sensitivity spectrometer integrated with telescope collection optics and on-board analysis electronics. A prototype stand-off fluorescence interrogation system will be demonstrated and delivered at the end of the Phase II project.  Specific functionalized nanoparticles will be tailored to identify selected target chemicals according to their combination of reactive functional groups.  A separate solution of functionalized nanoparticles will be developed to identify a target bacteria and provide intrinsic signal amplification.  This system is designed to be used from the ground to monitor local air to surface contamination. BENEFITS: This new tool is designed to reduce the risk of personal exposure of soldiers to local biological and chemical agents by increasing the effective sensing distance for stand-of detection, while identifying the threat and minimizing false alarms.  Initially the primary customers for this technology would be military agencies responsible for evaluating potential sites of biological or chemical agent release or for evaluating potential chemical weapons storage or production facilities. Civilian applications will include emergency responders at biological or chemical disaster sites, and automated monitoring of chemical production facilities for increased safety.
