Research abstract

PhaseSpace will develop a Portable Missile Miss-Distance Identification system leveraging hardware and software developed for the US Air Force and for commercial broadcasting of sports events. The solar powered monitoring station will record high speed videos with multiple 30 megapixel video cameras to provide position, velocity, and trajectory information from a safe offset location and allow a remote operator to  aim, calibrate and set up the tests as well as review the test data from high speed video and automatically calculate 3D data. Using a 30 megapixel sensor from commercial Partner Panavision SVI, capable of 1.2 billion pixels per second, the PMMDIS system will visually acquire the missile as it enters the field of view at up to 10,000 frames per  second, with multiple cameras. 3D information will be calculated automatically from the base distance between cameras with optical flow detection of objects moving at high speeds with a minimum of on site resources. The real time video feed will be delivered to a provided secure data channel to allow remote monitoring and adjustments. Basic  capability will be demonstrated in Phase I and a fully functioning system will be deployed and tested in Phase II. BENEFITS: Applicable to evaluating targeting accuracy for a wide variety of weapons systems.  Commercial application: Methodology is applicable to collision avoidance in automotive and construction industries, and to motion analysis and broadcast sports analysis.
