Research abstract

This Phase II proposal continues QD Vision’s research and development objectives to develop materials and processes for direct patterning of individual red, green and blue sub-pixels on silicon micro-display substrates without the use of color filters. In Phase I of the program, our efforts focused on demonstrating high resolution microcontact printing of quantum dots (QDs) and developing top-emitting QD light emitting devices (QD-LEDs). QD-LED technology has the potential to enable direct patterning of individual colors on a micro-display substrate, substantially reducing power consumption. QD-LED emitters offer narrow band spectral characteristics providing an excellent color gamut that meets or exceeds current NTSC display standards. In this Phase II solicitation, we propose a program to develop and refine the microcontact printing processes and top-emitting device structures of Phase I for fabricating high resolution, full-color QD-LED micro-displays. The proposed approach will leverage QD Vision’s development of high efficiency colloidal QDs and QD-LEDs, as well as the company’s proprietary process capability for high resolution patterned deposition of electroluminescent devices. A functional full-color QD-LED micro-display prototype will be fabricated and its performance will be characterized.
