Research abstract

SI2 Technologies, Inc. (SI2) proposes to build on the success of its Phase I effort by developing a modular symbiotic satellite structure with a structurally integrated wideband antenna array to reduce the volume and weight of the system.  The proposed concept utilizes SI2s proprietary low temperature conformal electronics manufacturing technology to transform the satellite structure into an integral part of the antenna system.  The resulting symbiotic structure will retain its desirable structural properties while increasing the performance of the phased array antenna.  SI2 has teamed with a prime contractor who will provide system requirements and implementation opportunities to help ensure applicability and begin work towards technology transition.  The Phase II program will demonstrate the next step in integrating an antenna array as part of the load carrying structure.  Electromagnetic and structural performance of the symbiotic satellite structure antenna system will be proven through advanced simulation techniques and coupon and sub-structure testing.  The manufacturability and ability to integrate the electromagnetic and mechanical properties into a single structure will be established through the design and manufacture of a wideband symbiotic satellite structure antenna system demonstration article.    BENEFIT: Developing symbiotic structures through the integration of electronics with structural members will provide both volume and weight reductions to satellites while increasing their functionality.  Commercial applications of SI2s proprietary technology are numerous; smart structures can be used in automobiles, aircraft and commercial satellites.  Anticipated benefits in the commercial sector include increased fuel efficiency and lower cost access to space.
