Research abstract

Current clothing worn by soldiers offers little to no protection from biological agents. Biological agents may remain active on the textile surface or even pass through the textile. Luna Innovations, with partners Shawmut Corporation and Triton Systems Incorporated, are developing biocidal textiles capable of rendering lethal biological agents harmless on contact. Reactive biocides are deposited in a thin film on the textile surface through a gas phase process, resulting in a lightweight antimicrobial textile. Covalent attachment and crosslinking of the biocidal coating resulting from the plasma process results in long term protection on repeated laundering. During the Phase II program, Luna and their team will maximize durability and optimize processing parameters for the Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Liquid Deposition (APPLD) process with Luna’s novel reactive biocides on cotton, nylon, and polyester fabrics.
