Research abstract

Although vehicle extraction skill training exists in the military, there is a pressing need for casualty extraction training that incorporates environmental dangers and the ability adapt and reuse the training instruments (i.e. the vehicles). Due to the complexities of the various ways in which the vehicle may come to rest, the injuries sustained by those within the vehicle and the dangers of the environment this type of training needs to be able to be manipulated and repeated across a wide variety of variables. Utilizing “discarded vehicles” is not effective as they can often only be utilized once and lack the ability to be adapted to specific training needs. Furthermore, performing extraction techniques beyond the basic level in the military requires the additional environmental stressors that are found in theater. The purpose of this work is threefold: 1) to examine the KSAs of those engaging in casualty vehicle extraction in order to determine the requirements of what needs to be trained 2) to develop and evaluate the feasibility of possible simulation strategies to effectively train extraction techniques and procedures and 3) develop a simulation based trainer capable of training extraction techniques under realistic environments (e.g., time constraints, sounds, smells, noise).
