Research abstract

The EMGR Phase II program addresses a critical Army requirement to mitigate the effect of poor GPS satellite visibility in an urban environment for a SWAP (size, weight and power) constrained dismounted soldier. In the Phase I of this program, Mayflower developed and evaluated, through simulation modeling and analyses, several signal processing techniques to optimize the positioning performance for the military ground users (vehicles, soldiers, robotic platforms and sensors) engaged in operations in a severely degraded signal conditions of urban environment. The Phase I study results have concluded that these techniques have potential to improve the positioning performance for the military ground users in an urban environment and a significant portion of these improvements can be achieved with software-only modifications to Mayflower’s NavAssure™ Receiver. In this Phase II program, Mayflower proposes to further evaluate these signal processing techniques, implement them on the NavAssure™ Receiver and demonstrate the incremental benefits of these signal processing techniques on demonstration platforms. Successful completion of this proposed Phase II effort will result in a small size, low-cost, and low-power, high sensitivity GPS receiver capable of providing uninterrupted navigation in severely degraded signal conditions of ground-based military applications in urban environments.
