Research abstract

The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) requires a superior testing and simulation environment to validate complex Ballistic Missile Defense Systems that incorporate a broad range of geographically distributed systems, including: command and control, missile warning, intelligence assets, sensors (in several passbands), signal processing, target discrimination, Hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) facilities, battle management, and kill assessment systems. Despite their disparate locations, these systems need to be tested with realistic scenarios during the validation of system algorithms, system implementation and subsystem inter-operation. Thus an important goal of the MDA development community where an “exerciser” incrementally incorporates these geographically and technically diverse assets into a system-wide test. During the Phase I, CG2 Inc. (CG2) studied the synchronization requirements of these geographically distributed assets and the communications links that connect them, and has been providing MDA prototype solutions to synchronize HWIL with the agency’s finest grained synchronization. CG2 researched a “synchrony monitor”, and developed prototype software intended to categorize link-status and monitor link qualtity during distributed test operations.
