Research abstract

A program to develop a prototype hyperspectral scope based upon a novel non-scanning 3-D hyperspectral detector is proposed. The proposed system builds upon Surface Optics’ real-time hyperspectral imaging activities and especially our recently-developed hyperspectral imaging technique to generate a compact scope that includes real-time overlay of hyperspectrally identified objects of interest. Wavelength coverage extends from the visible through short wavelength infrared to provide passive day/night operation. By virtue of the use of low-cost imaging arrays and removal of any need for scanning as is necessary in other hyperspectral imagers, the new hyperspectral scope will be both inexpensive and compact. Integral to the system is a real-time processor, initially implemented using SOC’s current processing technology but with a path to migration to recent advances in multi-core DSP processors. By building on Surface Optics Corporation’s 17 years experience in hyperspectral imaging system development, sensor development, and algorithm development, the proposed program will produce a new hyperspectral scope (HyperScope) of unsurpassed capability, with varied military and commercial applications.
