Research abstract

The total defense related corrosion costs are estimated at $20 billion of the total annual U.S. cost estimates of greater than $300 billion. Much of the costs are associated with the maintenance of metal materials; 20% of the estimated corrosion-related costs involve scraping and repainting steel structures. Because of the staggering costs stemming from corrosion of steel infrastructure, there is a tremendous need to develop intelligent coatings to greatly enhance corrosion resistance. Luna is addressing the need to enhance the service life of aircraft, munitions material handling equipment (MMHE), and general support equipment through a multifunctional coating system. This research program will develop robust, inexpensive ultrahydrophobic coatings that repel water and corrosion causing materials as a first line of defense for metal structures. These coatings will also be formulated with energy absorbing materials to resist sand abrasion in harsh environments. The technology developed on this program will decrease life cycle costs, reduce maintenance, and increase readiness by limiting equipment down-time.
