Research abstract

The sensor and weapon resource management problem for Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) considering adversary's choice of launch times, aimpoint locations, and countermeasures is a challenging game theory problem. Scientific Systems Company, Inc. of Woburn, MA and its subcontractor, Lockheed Martin MS2 Tactical Systems (LMTS) propose a novel general stochastic game-theoretic approach to the BMD problem that draws upon our previous joint work for Department of Defense in the areas of multisensor multitarget tracking, sensor management, controlled diffusion processes, and weapon target assignment. In Phase I of the project, SSCI and LMTS will develop realistic mathematical models for the tactical ballistic missile engagements and develop methods for optimal dynamic sensor and weapon resource management. By using game theoretical approaches, we will establish techniques for computing optimum strategies for offense and defense using simulated data. Phase II will result in integrated wargaming simulation framework suitable for the testing and evaluation of resource management algorithms in realistic and complex threat scenarios. Lockheed Martin will provide both technical and commercialization support during all phases of the project.
