Research abstract

Scientific Systems Company, Inc. (SSCI) proposes to prototype PATCHWork, a distributed computing data fabric to enable powerful new levels of data visibility and interoperability across the SDA’s Proliferate d Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA) satellite and ground segments. The PATCHWork data fabric is constructed as a distributed edge and a centralized cloud segment, that would run onboard the PWSA satellites as well as within SDA SUPERNOVA and Combatant Command (CCMD) computing systems. PATCHWork includes multiple applications in each segment leveraging tailored open-source software, and deployed as containerized software. This effort will prototype the PATCHWork system along with example use cases and analysis demonstrating the capabilities and utility for users via a path of several program milestones. PATCHWork bolsters the resilience and capabilities of the PWSA while enabling new capabilities for military user situational awareness, PWSA resilience to anomalies and adversarial action, insight into PWSA operational service quality, and optimization of future PWSA service delivery to the SDA’s users in the CCMDs. By providing a seamless data fabric and query system that supports industry-ubiquitous queries across satellite and ground-based data, PATCHWork enables all manner of data science and operations insight into PWSA engineering data. PATCHWork represents a strategic investment in future Tranche engineering operations. This proposal outlines the technical feasibility, commercial possibilities, and plan for development of PATCHWork. The milestones identified in this section methodically progress from initial system architecture through multiple demos, where our PATCHWork prototype will be deployed on a benchtop Edge Processor Environment (EPE) network of processors which represent orbital edge processors. These benchtop processors will be connected to the cloud with the data fabric, queries, and machine learning running across the system to create value from simulated flight telemetry and log data. PATCHWork provides a prototype of future cross-constellation distributed computing and data "fabric" that bridges the space-ground boundary to enable mission operations data visibility, data science, analytics, and operations improvements for the warfighter and civilian operators.
