Research abstract

Scientific Systems Company, Inc. (SSCI), and Gibbs & Cox (G&C) propose AI-Aided Design (A2D), a software design tool which automates the design process for Navy vessels, with an emphasis on autonomous surface vessels up to 200 feet long.  A2D will enable faster design processes, while producing manufacturable and low-maintenance designs.  A2D leverages a variety of existing technologies developed by the PI for other design optimization problems, namely the design of Wave Energy Converters (WECs) and Formula SAE automobiles.  These technologies will be adapted for ship design optimization and we will demonstrate the improved designs enabled by leveraging AI/ML techniques into ship design, a process historically driven by human engineers.
