Research abstract

ThinkOrbital’s TACFI project advances the ThinkX system—a space-based, penetrating X-ray imaging platform—for internal inspection of spacecraft and resident space objects (RSOs). The system combines a 150kV electron-beam X-ray generator, polycapillary focusing optics, and a multi-layer, space-rated X-ray detector to deliver long-range (up to 10 km) internal imaging not possible with current electro-optical, infrared, or RF technologies. Building on Phase II accomplishments, which validated component operation in vacuum conditions and demonstrated early imaging capabilities, this effort will integrate and evaluate all three subsystems under simulated orbital environments. A new 10-meter X-ray-compatible vacuum chamber will support high-fidelity testing, enabling beam divergence measurement, flux propagation, and imaging validation at realistic standoff distances. ThinOrbital will quantify alignment sensitivity and subsystem interoperability to establish system readiness for on-orbit demonstration. The contract aligns with Space Systems Command’s SDA goals and directly supports SSC/SZAS (Space Safari), which serves as the customer and end-user organization. The technical objectives include validating subsystem performance, confirming image resolution and detection thresholds, and ensuring software robustness during extended operations. ThinkX’s unique internal imaging capabilities will fill a critical Space Domain Awareness gap, enabling detection of concealed anomalies, fuel levels, and internal configurations. By conclusion, the system will have completed ground validation and will be ready for Phase III or STRATFI transition.
