Research abstract

ThinkOrbital’s ThinkPlatform is a modular, autonomous orbital infrastructure system designed to provide tactically responsive, forward-based staging, asset deployment, and in-space servicing for U.S. Space Force and commercial space missions. Building on a successful Phase I STTR with the Georgia Institute of Technology, this follow-on Phase II effort will refine system-level requirements, validate a <12-hour response CONOPS via orbital logistics modeling, and demonstrate robotic assembly, electron beam welding, and X-ray nondestructive evaluation (NDE) in a lab setting. ThinkPlatform addresses critical operational gaps by reducing reliance on terrestrial launch infrastructure and enabling on-demand deployment of ISR, communications, and navigation payloads from hardened orbital depots in LEO, MEO, and GEO. Anticipated benefits include dramatically shortened deployment timelines, improved survivability in contested space environments, and greater mission resilience. Commercial applications include satellite servicing, orbital logistics, hosted payloads, and microgravity research, supporting NASA’s Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) initiative and broader in-space manufacturing markets. This effort matures ThinkOrbital’s infrastructure technology toward a Phase III orbital demonstration and integration into Space Access, Mobility, and Logistics (SAML) operations.
