Research abstract

While the Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) has made huge strides in improving interoperability amongst software systems and applications, problems still exist. One SOA implementation is not necessarily compatible with another. For example, a service developed using Web services developed using SOAP cannot be easily used by a client relying on CORBA for communications. What is needed is a way to develop a service one time, using the implementation of choice. Then, have the ability to deploy that service in a way that allows for interaction with any number of SOA implementations. By applying the principles of the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), the Service Component Architecture (SCA), and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) such a solution is possible. The idea is to build a server that can run any type of service much in the same way a JVM runs any Java software on multiple platforms. This server would take advantage of the ESB and SCA to create a framework for development and deployment that allows existing and emerging services to be interoperable. This solution avoids impacting legacy systems and provides for extensibility to accommodate future service implementations / protocols, thus saving many man hours of design, development, and integration time.
