Research abstract

Fretting fatigue problems are found in nearly all mechanical components that have loaded contact surfaces subjected to high frequency, low amplitude vibratory loading such as aircraft engine blade-to-disk attachments, disk-to-disk joints, disk-to-shaft joints, shaft-to-shaft joints, and splines. In cases of high cycle fatigue, the complex stress states resulting from contacting surfaces in the loading history are important to consider in order to accurately predict damage. An innovative approach for predicting initiation and crack growth of structures subjected to fretting is proposed. The research will utilize, modify and build upon existing state-of-the art fatigue and fracture modules in an advanced CAE framework that will result in efficient models that use the multiaxial stress state due to fretting to determine crack initiation and crack growth life subjected to realistic high cycle engine fatigue spectra.
