Research abstract

We will develop a basic technology concept and prove concept feasability using modeling and simulation of an RFDS for the extended frequency band (2-18 GHz) utilizing both CLIC and cryogenic technologies. Using a combination of cryogenic filters, cryogenic low-noise amplifiers, and cryogenic conventional components, EMI tolerance and EMI rejection can be introduced into the RF front end without significantly increasing the noise figure of the system or impacting proper demodulation of the received waveform. First we will develop target RFDS specifications. Using these specifications, we will perform a link analysis/system design to determine the critical components in the chain from both a performance and technical challenge perspective. We will also outline the complete system architecture. Finally, we will explore the technologies to design any components identified as key challenging components. Successful completion of this effort will form a solid foundation for building and testing an engineering prototype in Phase II.
