Research abstract

All deployed shelters are candidates for enemy targeting and a broad range of air and ground threats are expected. The weapons include a mixture of small arms, iron bombs, mortar and /or artillery fire, precision-guided munitions and ground based and portable surface-to-surface missiles. During Phase 1, Sunrez focused on hybrid systems as the best opportunity to meet protection, cost, and weight optimization. These hybrids will combine two or more of: fiber reinforced polymeric composites, metal matrix composites, inorganics, and metallic materials. These hybrid materials systems, both historical and modern, have been evaluated under Phase 1. State-of-the-art prototypes have been made and tested to demonstrate the efficiency of hybrid armor technologies. The selected systems will be aggressively developed, tested, and constructed to determine optimum overall performance under Phase 2. The finalized advanced armor technology will be fully blast-tested and the lowest cost will be achieved. Shelter components will be delivered to the USAF at the end of Phase 2 that will meet the needs for shelters providing a high level of blast and ballistic protection.
