Research abstract

Because rigid wall tactical shelters are utilized by military personnel for a variety of missions around the world, these structures must be extremely dependable. The USAF is aggressively moving to state-of-the-art composite shelters because of their advantages in durability, lighter weight, and longer life with no corrosion. Metal floors in the current structures work well, but they require significant maintenance to fight corrosion and maintain structural integrity. Sunrez has devised a variety of methods to produce wear resistant coatings for composite floors. The coating technology will be durable and robust; providing compatibility with all of the materials and fabrication processes used to make flooring structures. Benefits of this floor coating will include its excellent adhesion to the underlying structure, high durability and wear resistance, and environmentally friendly processing. Sunrez’s solutions may also be applied to other vertical surfaces or roof panels to increase the wear resistance needed for protection against blowing sand, hail, and dirt. Sunrez will develop and deliver several prototype systems in Phase I and down select to at least two floor coating system technologies for full development in Phase II.
