Research abstract

Rigid wall tactical shelters are utilized by military personnel for a variety of missions around the globe. These shelters must be extremely durable to meet constantly changing operational requirements for the warfighter. Metal flooring in the current structures works very well but it requires continual maintenance to fight corrosion and maintain structural integrity. Therefore, the Air Force is moving towards shelters made of composite materials that will require extremely high wear resistant surface layers. During Phase 1, Sunrez investigated and successfully developed non-VOC resins that form wear resistant coatings. During Phase 2, Sunrez will fully develop and deliver this technology that produces durable and robust coatings that provide compatibility with all of the materials and fabrication processes used to make flooring structures, both metallic and composite. Benefits of this coating technology will include its excellent adhesion to the underlying structure, high durability and wear resistance, and economical and environmentally friendly (non-VOC, non-HAP) processing. The final optimized solution, will be delivery of a wear resistant coating that has wide applicability because it can be used on all surfaces horizontal and vertical, interior and exterior, not just on floors.
