Research abstract

Contaminants left on surface of a composite part during repair leads to poor quality bond. Dirt, oil, marking materials, grease, release materials, solvents, other organic and inorganic chemicals, cleaning material residues, biologicals from environment, grit from sanding and metal particles may remain. Menon and Associates is proposing to develop a molecular spin resonance instrument that combines both imaging and spectrographic modules to carry out a broad area scan followed by detailed scan of suspect areas. Both, the surface of part being repaired as well as new materials for repair can be scanned. The goal is to eliminate all non-resin and non-fiber materials upstream prior to and during the repair process. The system, called MENTOR-300B, will be built for complete quality assurance of composite materials spanning the breadth of inspecting the surface to be repaired, prepreg raw materials, its manufacturing process to final layup of composites.
