Research abstract

The use of vaporous hydrogen peroxide (VHP) has been shown to be an effective and safe means of decontaminating sensitive equipment and enclosed areas including buildings, tanks, and aircraft that have been contaminated with chemical and biological agents. Currently, a viable means of producing on-site vaporous hydrogen peroxide (VHP) for decontamination does not exist, and high concentrations of liquid-phase hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) must be transported to the field which is expensive, unsafe, and creates a logistical challenge. During the Phase I project, Lynntech successfully demonstrated the feasibility of an efficient, safe, on-demand electrochemical hydrogen peroxide generation system that provides high concentrations of liquid phase H2O2 for producing VHP and requires only water, air, and electricity, which are readily available in the field. During the Phase II project, Lynntech will design, fabricate, test, and demonstrate a working prototype portable H2O2 generation system that requires only water, air and electricity and produces at least 35 wt % H2O2 at the needed flow rate required to decontaminate a 27 cu ft. enclosure. The prototype system will be designed to meet the power, weight, volume requirements for a portable, field-ready device, and its operation will be demonstrated to U.S. Army personnel.
