Research abstract

In this research, Magneton will develop a single photon avalanche detector for satellite and lunar ranging capable of sub-millimeter measurement accuracy that is optimized for 1030 nm Yb:YAG lasers.  This single photon detector will have 1 kHz dark count rates and greater than 40% photon detection efficiency with a 100 micron diameter photosensitive area. Such a detector is not commercially available for near-infrared wavelengths and will offer significant advantages over visible wavelength single photon detectors for satellite and lunar ranging applications. This prototype will leverage the latest techniques in Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode fabrication and utilize advanced packaging and electronics technologies to achieve state-of-the-art near-infrared performance.
