High Precision Single Photon Detection System for 1030 nm Laser Ranging

Laser ranging at distances relevant for space applications requires extremely sensitive detectors.  Single photon avalanche diodes are one such detector capable of measuring the time of return of signals as small as a single photon. Detecting an object at both extremely long range and with millimeter accuracy using near infrared lasers requires an advanced detector which is not commercially available. This proposal describes the plan for development of such a detector, which includes a new device concept that initial simulations show can meet these demanding requirements.  This detector has the added benefits of simple fabrication and high-reliability planar design.  A plan for developing the required high-speed electronics is also described.  The deliverables for this Phase I effort will be a trade-study of existing detector and circuit technologies that will guide the final detector head design to be delivered at the end of the project for fabrication and test in Phase II.
