Research abstract

Existing coating systems for flight decks function as high friction surfaces that are corrosion and wear resistant. These coatings are not effective for reducing radar cross section of ships. The objective of Luna’s development effort is to develop a high friction, durable coating system that reduces the radar signature of flight decks and is suitable for use in marine environments. Luna has demonstrated the feasibility of an economical and durable non-skid coating that has high friction and radar absorbing properties. Luna’s first non-skid system met DDG 1000 requirements for signature reduction in Navy testing at Point Mugu, CA. The coating system also has wear and friction properties that meet current non-skid requirements. Luna will continue the development of a radar absorbing non-skid using VOC-free resins, safe corrosion inhibitors, and commercially available absorbers. A mixture of inorganic magnetic particles and nanomaterials will be incorporated in the non-skid coating to achieve the required radar signature reduction. The non-skid coating system will be formulated for conventional coating application processes and meet MIL-PRF-24667B requirements for non-skid coatings. The flight deck coating will be safe for workers to apply, VOC-free and contain non-toxic corrosion inhibitors.
