Research abstract

Makel Engineering proposes to work directly with missile contractors such as Lockheed Martin in developing an advanced Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS)-based chemical sensor system for the detection of hypergolic propellant leaks within missile containers. This technology will provide for the safe storage and transport of these propellants. Phase I of Makel Engineering’s proposal will be the demonstration of candidate sensor materials and MEMS-based microsensor system designs for use in the detection of hypergolic fuels and oxidizers. These materials and designs will be based on technology developed for the detection of hydrazine and NO2. The system’s smart control electronics will have the capability of monitoring rates of change in concentrations, which is a more reliable indicator of a system leak than concentration thresholds alone. MEI will demonstrate the operation of a prototype unit, build prototype sensors, and perform demonstration testing to define the capability of the system.
