Research abstract

Precision Combustion, Inc (PCI) proposes to a develop scalable lightweight and efficient JP-8 burner for generating electrical power from Stirling system. Successful development will result in highly efficient, ultra-compact, fuel-flexible burners, scalable, with high power density, capable of operation for 1000’s of hours, and enabling an overall JP-8 to electric efficiency approaching 30%. The approach combines an innovative catalyst technology, novel heat flux techniques, a low pressure drop recuperator, and a unique JP-8 injection system. In Phase I, PCI will develop and demonstrate burner feasibility for an 80 We FPSE. We will design, build and test the performance the burner, testing on a “test bar” which simulates the FPSE. The emphasis in burner development will be placed upon lightening the structural mass, minimizing the risk of fouling, reducing the maintenance cycle and increasing durability, without compromising burner efficiency. During the Phase I Option period robustness and integration issues will be examined. Burner durability and operation at -30 to +55 °C will be demonstrated. Data generated will be used to develop a FPSE and system design meeting Army needs. A modular, compact, efficient and simple power generation system will be identified and developed in Phase II.
