Research abstract

The Phase II project will build and test prototype actuators based on emerging ferromagnetic shape memory composite technology. The results of the Phase I design and simulation work showed that an actuator which combines an inchworm design with a shape memory composite membrane can provide excellent performance and flexibility for low- and intermediate-force applications. The Phase II work will focus on finalizing the design developed in the prior work, and building and testing the first actuator prototypes. After designing and fabricating the component parts, we will assemble actuators and conduct testing, including verifying the predicted specifications and testing for ruggedness and resistance to environmental extremes. With the prototype in hand, we will also begin to explore possible licensing and partnership opportunities with an eye towards rapid introduction of this technology to the market.
